WELCOME TO      SCHOOL OF LIFE

School of Life is a project initiated by Humanity Heroes. Humanity Heroes adopted existing learning centres in Malaysia, rebranded it to School of Life and improved the quality of education by streamlining and standardising systems and processes across the schools. The school is also open to anyone without access to education including migrants and stateless Malaysians.

BACKGROUND

As of end December 2020, there are some 178,610 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Malaysia. A total of 154,030 are from Myanmar, comprising some 102,250 Rohingyas, 22,410 Chins, and 29,360 other ethnic groups from conflict-affected areas or fleeing persecution in Myanmar. There are 24,570 refugees and asylum-seekers from 50 countries fleeing war and persecution, including the total of 6,610 Pakistanis, 3,650 Yemenis, 3,250 Syrians 3,230 Somalis, 2,670 Afghans, 1,740 Sri Lankans, 1,210 Iraqis, 750 Palestinians, and others. 68% of the refugees and asylum-seekers are men, while 32% are women. Furthermore, there are about 45,750 children who are below the age of 18, who are deprived of basic education.

Malaysia is not a signatory to the 1951 UN Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol. Technically, the term refugee does not officially exist in any framework of the government of Malaysia. Refugees are considered illegal immigrants and living without basic human rights including education. Refugee children have no access to government funded schools whether they are registered with UNHCR or not. Private schools are just too expensive for many of them who are already living a hard life earning very little money from odd jobs just to put some food on the table for their family apart from many other challenges.

Some of the refugees are attending informal learning centres or community-based classes organised by the community or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) but many more did not. According to the United Nations refugee agency in Malaysia, the UNHCR (UN High Commissioner for Refugees), there are a total of 164,620 registered refugees and asylum-seekers as of the end of January 2019. About 42,750 are under the age of 18, with much lesser number of school-going ages but based on older data, only about 30% are enrolled in around 130 existing community learning centres in Malaysia.

WHY?

According to Malaysian laws, these refugees are not allowed to work in this country. As a result, many of these refugees could not afford to send their children to schools. School of Life (SOL) aims to address this problem.

OBJECTIVES
  1. To provide free education to refugees as well as those in need.
  2. To create a non-hostile and comfortable environment for children to learn and grow
  3. To establish a school that is fully run by refugees, to help these refugees to regain their life here in Malaysia
